Census records: search example

I was at a loss to find my great grandfather's two brothers. They had all immigrated together as a family and for more than ten years had all lived in the same small village in Minnesota. After 1905, however, these two brothers just disappeared. In looking over an obituary from 1910, one of the brothers was listed as living in a different Minnesota village about 200 miles away. Checking the census records, I was able to confirm the move and trace the family.

Here are some sample census records. The first record is from the 1850 census for Meigs County, OH. A child named "Delilah" is highlighted with an arrow.

The second is from the 1860 census for Jackson County,  VA (now WV and it is located across the river from Meigs County). Again, Delilah is highlighted with an arrow. Her name was abbreviated at "Del."

Note that the mother, Sarah, became the head of household after the death of her husband George.
